Depending on where you live, one of the best all around books about gardening is the Sunset Western Garden Book. It is a kind encyclopedia of every house and garden plants that can grow in the western United States. It also includes lots of specific information about how to prepare the gardens, identify and eradicate pests, the specific requirements of the plant (soil type, water, fertilizer, pruning, etc.). While it is specific to the western U.S., is applicable to many other parts of the country from the western U.S. has a great variety of climates.
