Making a garden
The first thing in garden making is the selection of a place. Without a selection, it means simply doing the best that can with conditions. With limited space that is fixed in any garden, or a box garden. Surely a box garden is better than nothing.
But Now let's assume that it is possible to really choose just the right spot for the garden. What to choose? The most determining factor is the sun. No one had a corner north unless it was absolutely forced upon him because, while north corners do for ferns, certain wild flowers, and begonias, are of little use as points for a garden in general.
If possible, choose the place of a southern exposure. Here the sun is warm all day. When the garden is therefore the rows of vegetables and flowers that run north to south. Thus placed, the plants receive the sun all morning on the eastern side, and all afternoon on the west side. One should not be any crooked plant with that agreement.
Suppose that the garden faces southeast. In this case the western sun is out the problem. To obtain the best distribution of sunlight run the rows northwest and southeast.
The idea is to maximize sunlight most regularly distributed as possible for the longest period of time. From the lopsided growth of window plants it is quite easy to see the effect on plants poorly distributed light. So if you use a little diagram remembering that you want the sun to shine part of the day on one side of the plants and, moreover, you can play to any situation. The southern exposure gives the ideal case, because the sun gives half time nearly to each side. A northern exposure may mean a cut-off almost everything of sunlight, places, while the northeast and southwest of always having an uneven distribution of sunlight, no matter how carefully this is planned.
The garden, if possible, should be planned on paper. The plan is a big help when the real planting time comes. It saves time and unnecessary buying of seed.
New garden spots are likely to be found in the two conditions that are covered with grass or garbage. In large gardens, the soil is plowed and turned into the grass, but in small gardens remove the sod. How to remove the lawn in the best way is the next question. Offline Gambling and the site of the garden. The line gives an accurate and straight course to follow. Cut the edges with the blade along the line. If the area is small, say four feet of eighteen or twenty, this is an easy matter. This narrow strip can be marked as a chess board, cutting through the grass blade, and is easily removed. This could be done in two long strips cut lengthwise of the strip. When grass is cut through, roll it like a roll of carpet.
But suppose the garden plot is very large. Then divide this into strips a foot wide and remove the sod as before. What will be done with the lawn? Do not throw it away because it is full of wealth, although not as much as available. So the package side lawn for a place in another. Leave it to rot and weather. When a fertilizer ago rotted well. This cell decomposition vegetable matter is called a compost pile. Throughout the summer add any old green vegetable matter to this. In the fall put the autumn leaves on. Many fine the goodness is being fixed for another season.
Even when the garden is big enough to plow, I would choose the largest pieces of sod rather than having them turned under. Go into space plow, pick up pieces of sod, shake well and pack them in a compost pile.
Spading the earth simply because not enough. The soil is still left in pieces. Always as one spades must be broken into large pieces. But even so the ground is not fit for planting. Land must very well done to the plant because the seeds can be very close indeed to fine particles of soil. But big chunks leave big spaces that no root hair tiny they can penetrate. A seed is left stranded in a perfect loss when planted in chunks of soil. A baby surrounded with great pieces of beefsteak would starve. A seed of the great pieces of land is in a similar situation. The shovel can do the job of spraying the ground. But the rake. That is the value of the rake. This is a great mass switch, but will not for lumps large. If the soil still has large lumps in it take the hoe.
Many people hoe handle awkwardly. The main work of this practice is to remove the soil of weeds and stir the top surface. It is used in summer for the powder form of mulch so valuable in retaining moisture in the soil. Often people as if they were going to cut into atoms everything around. Hilling should never be a vigorous exercise like that. Spading is vigorous, hard work, but not hoe and rake.
After the lumps are broken use the rake to make the bed fine and smooth. Now the hard work that done.
